The story of Solomon is intriguing. On the one hand he is famously wise and a brilliant leader, administrator and builder. On the other hand he readily succumbs to major temptations. His reign represents the highpoint of the people of God in the Old Testament but the fall is quick and drastic when Solomon dies. His reign gives us a glimpse of God’s purposes through the Old Testament, and the problems that thwart it being realised. Solomon’s legacy is ambiguous at best. The account of Solomon remains highly pertinent, for Christian leaders as well as for Christians in general.

The Rev’d Dr Paul Barker is Visiting Scholar at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia where he teaches Old Testament and Preaching. He is the author of two books on Deuteronomy, and several articles on both preaching as well as on Old Testament. He is working on a commentary on 1 and 2 Kings. He regularly teaches in Myanmar, Thailand, Pakistan and India. Earlier Dr Barker was Archdeacon n the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne and Senior Minister of Holy Trinity Doncaster, Melbourne.
