Why do you want to join a small group? “I’m looking for a group of like-minded friends,” someone might say. And that’s pretty much an honest answer for most people. We seek small groups for support and friendship.

Why would Jesus want us to join a small group? A possible answer might be: “to serve God and his people, and to make God’s work a reality here and now.”

On the top of Jesus’ selection criteria of small group members is service. He chose his members for their capacity — and willingness — to transform their work in gospel service. They would no longer go fish for fishing’s sake. They were called to fish for people.

Likewise ourselves. Our work is not merely

work. It has become a ministry for God and God’s people.

Currently, I am a writer. Writers are taught to write for writing’s sake. But when I become a follower of Jesus, he transforms my deepest purpose for writing. Now I need to see that writing is a ministry for serving God and people. Nothing is done merely for it’s own sake. Because of Jesus, everything we do — whether it’s parenting or washing plates or leading a company — is done for God’s sake, and for the sake of others.

Work is service. It’s easy for us to lose sight of this perspective. That’s why we need small groups.

We join small groups to serve others. Jesus trained his disciples to serve the masses when he fed the 5,000. In a small group setting, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet. “Since I have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow.”

Do you really want to serve people?

At CDPC Puchong, small groups are not for syiok sendiri. We come together because we want to serve God and His people.
